History:

The LDRC was formed in 1979 when a group of racing Enthusiasts decided that Leinster should have a Race club like Leonora,Laverton and Wiluna so as to create a more Racing in the North Eastern Goldfields.

A general meeting was called in April 1979 and a decision was made to approach the WATC for permission to form a Race Club.

The first president of the LDRC was Mr Leo Boni and the Secretary was Ms Shirley Cox with a good representative of experienced racing people making up the committee. This was granted in May 1979 and the Club set about planning and Building the course and facilities.

The track was planned by Mr Jim Steinhauser who was the handicapper in the goldfields at the time.

Because of limited area to locate the track Jim had come up with the idea of having a 1200 Metre track similar to one he had seen in Queensland and the club agreed with the idea which in turn makes it a good for spectators to watch the racing.

In October 1979 the first Race Meeting was held and consisted of 6 Local Bred Races ( being Horses that had never raced in a registered race ) and 2 Races for Registered horses.

Only approved riders were permitted to ride at the meeting.

As time went by the programme was changed to allow more registered races and less local bred and then eventually it was decided to have only Registered Races with professional Jockeys. Like all Clubs the LDRC has seen some major changes in track conditions and course improvements over the years and now run what is considered to be a well run community Club with the support of RWWA and all officials.

Next Year (2019) in October will be our 40th anniversary – more information to be provided in 2019 via our Facebook page.

History: It is documented that a meeting was held in January 1901 with the feature event the Collie Cup. The original Race Club was situated on the banks of the picturesque Collie river. It experienced many difficult periods between 1900 and 1930, lapsing during the Great Depression. In 1928 an embryo Golf Course was developed and after negotiations with the Race Club, the straight of the racecourse was used for the first activity. In 1945 the Race Club was revived with a meeting which featured the Cup. The Club prospered during the late forties and early fifties but in 1954 the meeting was abandoned due to lack on nominations and despite several attempts in 1955/56 the club become inactive. The track and facilities through lack on maintenance fell into a state of disrepair and was eventually taken over by the Collie Golf Club which is now an 18 hole course and major attraction in Collie.

Alf Hampton trained Fernridge to win the 1940 Perth Cup. Alf’s grandson Brad is a well known Vet and prominent in the breeding industry. Bill McClusky was a prominent S.P.-bookmaker in the days when S.P. bookies fielded from their stands in the main street after having made “arrangements” with the local sergeant before the first. Interest in racing once again surfaced in the 70s when the shire obtained the lease on an area of Crown Land and vested it in the Collie Sports Club which subsequently become the current Race Club.

The first meeting of the new club was held in 1983 to celebrate the Centenary of Collie Coal with huge crowd in attendance. There were no buildings, running water, power of communications. Since then the meeting has been held each year with the 2014 Collie Cup meeting the best since 1983. Facilities have been gradually improved to meet the expectations of patrons. There is a modern tote, bar, canteen and grassed area as well as an undercover area, with disables access to all areas. The track is 1720 metres based on the Belmont track and has a slight incline in the straight. Surface of the track is sand which is always in excellent condition.

Camping is available with stabling nearby.

History: The Moora Race Club was established in 1907 – this is the first written history of the club.

The Bystino Grandstand, which is still in use today, was built in 1925 for 840 pounds, with seating for approximately 200 race goers. In the early years, the club had two meetings on a long weekend. Up to 60 horses would travel by rail from Midland and Perth. Many improvements have been made over the last few years to it’s running rail, mounting yard and grassed areas. In early 2009 a new jockey’s facility was built.-

The club used to hold long weekend race meets with racing on Saturdays and Monday’s. Up to 60 horses would come up to the club by train from Midland. On the Saturday night the race club would put on a glamorous ball and dance and was the hight of the social calendar.

In the 30′s they introduced trotting races, although the kind they rode not drove in buggies. This didn’t however last long. For many years they had 2 meetings a year, one in Autumn and one in Spring. The Spring time meet has always been the main event holding the Moora Cup. During these early years other towns near Moora also have race courses – Dandaragan, Waddington, Three Springs – none of these race courses exist today except for Moora.-
