| History: | The Pingrup Races have been running since 1932.. Pingrup has a long and proud history of breeding thoroughbred Race Horses and during the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s it ranged from being a hobby to a serious profession for many locals. The likes of Steve Wolfe, Dixie Solly, Murray Reid and Kevin Smith were all locals that have gone on to have good success in the local horse racing industry – particularly in the Albany region. The original Race Meet began as a picnic sports meeting on a race course just north of town in a farmer’s paddock. In 1950 the event moved to its current location at the Pingrup Recreation Ground. In the 1960’s the state 440 yard running championships were held in conjunction with the local race day. The Pingrup Race Meet runs 6 races throughout the day starting at around 1pm. The premier race of the day is the Murray Reid Memorial Cup run later in the afternoon. The Pingrup Races boasts a traditional outside bar, wine tasting, fashions on the field, entertainment throughout the day, two-up in the evening and live music at night. Camping sites are available and a recovery breakfast is supplied in the morning for those that stay the night. |
